DETERMINATION OF ALKALOIDS, SAPONIN AND TANNIN IN RAW PUMPKIN LEAVES
Abstract
This study investigates the presence and concentrations of alkaloids, saponins, and tannins in raw pumpkin leaves (Telfairia occidentails), highlighting their potential nutritional and medicinal values. The extraction and quantification of these bioactive compounds were conducted using quantitative analytical techniques. Results revealed that raw pumpkin leaves contain alkaloids at a concentration of 0.950 mg/g, saponins at 0.1695 mg/g, and tannins at 0.0417 mg/g. The significant presence of these compounds supports the therapeutic applications of pumpkin leaves in traditional medicine, particularly for their analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. Furthermore, the study underscores the importance of pumpkin leaves as a source of bioactive compounds that can contribute to health and wellness. The findings advocate for the incorporation of pumpkin leaves into dietary practices and call for further research into their pharmacological applications, which may enhance their utilization in nutraceuticals and herbal medicine. This research contributes valuable data to the understanding of the phytochemical profile of pumpkin leaves and reinforces their role in traditional and modern healthcare systems.
