RISKS OF SMOKING AND ITS HEALTH IMPLICATIONS AMONG YOUTHS OF AMAI COMMUNITY
Abstract
The study results indicated a strong number of people from the range of 18-22 who currently smoke and also a high number of people who have friends that smoke even among those who are not smokers themselves, it also recorded a high number of people who smoke together with friends and recorded that the item being smoked (e.g cigarette) was very easy to get and it didn’t require much struggle. Total number of people who smoke were 7 and all 7 of them recorded that they don’t have plans to quit smoking. This data above showed a very strong correlation between social influence and smoking habits in the community. Specifically, a higher number of individuals reported having friends who smoke, as well as smoking with friends. This suggests that social pressure may be a significant factor in the adoption and maintenance of smoking behavior and the prevalence of smoking in Amai community. Social influence can be a powerful force in shaping behavior, particularly among young people. Peer pressure, social modeling, and the desire to fit in can lead individuals to engage in behaviors that they might not otherwise engage in.
