ASSESSMENT OF SHELL COMMUNITY RELATIONS PRACTICE IN WARRI SOUTH LGA
Abstract
The study evaluates Shell BP's community relations practices in the Warri South Local Government Area (LGA) of Delta State, Nigeria, focusing on the effectiveness of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, stakeholder engagement strategies, and development interventions in addressing socio-economic and environmental concerns. The research used qualitative and quantitative methodologies, including interviews, surveys, and document analysis, to evaluate community members' perceptions. The data showed that males accounted for 37.5% of the population, while females made up 62.5%. The population was grouped into age groups of 18-30, 31-40, and 51 and older, with 45% of the population having university education, 35% having secondary education, and 15% having no formal education. The survey concluded that a considerable section of the populace has gained from Shell BP, with some gaining job advantages and healthcare benefits. The study recommends that sustainable and inclusive community interactions require broader stakeholder participation, improved openness, strengthened environmental responsibility, and frequent assessments of engagement frameworks. Recommendations include strengthening Shell's CSR strategy and developing long-term trust and partnership with host communities.
