AN ASSESSMENT OF THE USE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY TO ENHANCE COMFORT IN STUDENT ACCOMMODATION: A CASE OF AJAYI CROWTHER UNIVERSITY OYO
Abstract
This study investigated the potential of solar energy to enhance comfort in student accommodation at Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, addressing current energy challenges and evaluating existing infrastructure to propose sustainable solutions. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach through surveys, observations, and energy consumption measurements, the research revealed significant inconsistencies in energy supply, negatively impacting student comfort and academic productivity. Findings demonstrate that strategic implementation of solar energy systems can provide reliable power, improve thermal and visual comfort, and reduce the university's carbon footprint. The study concludes that solar energy is a viable option for meeting student comfort needs, recommending phased implementation of solar photovoltaic systems, comprehensive renewable energy policies, and integration of energy-efficient practices. Future research should include longitudinal studies to assess the sustained impact of solar systems on comfort and operational costs, alongside detailed economic and financial modeling for broader applicability
