PHYTOCHEMICAL EVALUATION AND ANTI-DIARRHOEA ACTIVITY OF THE AERIAL PART EXTRACT OF POLYGONUM SENEGALESE MEIS
Abstract
Polygonum Senegalese (meisns) methanol aerial part extract was investigated for its phytochemical content as well as anti-diarrhoeal effect The methanol aerial part extract subjected to qualitative phytochemical screening Graded dose of extract (100 and 200 mg/kg) were administered orally to the two group of rat (n=3) before induction of diarrhoeal with castor oil. another two group of animal were treated with normal saline (control) and lipoamide, a conventional anti-diarrhoeal drug respectively. The extract produced a significant inhibition of the castor oil induced diarrhoeal by the various graded dose of the extract used in this study the phytochemical analysis of the methanol aerial part extract revealed the presence of secondary metabolite such as cardenolides, cardiac glycoside flavonoid saponins tannins and terpenoids. The finding suggest that, the methanol aerial extract of the polygonum Senegalese possesses anti diarrhoeal effect. The finding from the research work revealed that the used of polygonum Senegalese meins in the treatment of different diseases by traditional healer have being scientifically proven. Although the activity of the extract of polygonium Senegalese meins aerial part is less than, that of the control drugs used (lipromide) finding from this research work revealed that the use polygonium
