Abstract

This study examined the problems of primary school education in Borno State with particular reference to Maiduguri Metropolitan. The study aimed to identify the major challenges affecting the quality and effectiveness of primary education and to suggest possible solutions for improvement. The research adopted a descriptive research design and utilized both primary and secondary sources of data. Data were collected through the use of structured questionnaires administered to selected respondents, including teachers, parents, and school administrators within the study area. A random sampling technique was used to select the respondents. The data collected were analyzed using simple percentages and tabulation methods. The findings of the study revealed that several factors contribute to the problems facing primary school education in Maiduguri Metropolitan. These include shortage of qualified teachers, inadequate teaching and learning materials, poor funding by the government, lack of teacher motivation, poor supervision of schools, and negative attitudes of some parents towards their children's education. The study concluded that these challenges have significantly affected the quality and standard of primary education in the area. Based on the findings, the study recommended that the government should employ more qualified teachers, improve teachers’ welfare and conditions of service, provide adequate instructional materials, ensure regular supervision of schools, and encourage parents to support their children's education. Addressing these issues will help improve the standard and effectiveness of primary school education in Borno State.
