KNOWLEDGE OF NUTRITIONAL MANAGEMENT OF PEPTIC ULCER AMONG FINAL YEAR NURSING STUDENTS IN MADONNA UNIVERSITY ELELE, RIVERS STATE
Abstract
Peptic ulcer has been one of the most prevalent diseases in the world, and some of its complications
have been the major causes of morbidity and mortality. The focus of this study is on the knowledge
of nutritional management of peptic ulcer among final year nursing students in Madonna
University Elele, Rivers State. Three objectives were formulated to guide the study. Data were
collected from a sample size of 146 final year nursing students using a questionnaire. The data was
descriptively summarized with the use of frequency, percentages and tables. From my findings, it
was revealed that 53 (36.3%) strongly agreed that Smoking, use of NSAIDs and alcohol
consumption contribute to the development of peptic ulcer, 47 (32.2%) agreed to it, 19 (13.0%)
disagreed to it and 27 (18.5%) strongly disagreed to it. 59 (40.4%) strongly agreed that a person
with peptic ulcer should avoid spicy foods, citrus fruits and high fat diet, 58 (39.7%) agreed to it,
13 (8.9%) disagreed to it, 16 (11.0) disagreed to it. 55 (37.7%) strongly disagreed that Peptic ulcer
can be managed through adherence to medications like Gascol as prescribed by the physician, 51
(34.9%) agreed to it, 19 (13.0%) disagreed to it, 21 (14.4%) strongly disagreed to it. It was
recommended that peptic ulcer and its nutritional management should be included in the school
curriculum to promote vast knowledge of peptic ulcer and the application of that knowledge, even
though there is a high level of knowledge about nutritional management of PUD, there is still room
for improvement. Since this is essential for finding the right treatment and promptly reporting any
complications, it also highlights the need to improve public health education about common
conditions like PUD, whose awareness should not be constrained by peculiar educational
background.
