COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF MATERNAL MORTALITY IN ADAMAWA STATE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Maternal mortality remains a significant public health challenge in Nigeria, particularly in Adamawa State. This study conducts a comparative analysis of maternal mortality between Specialist Hospital and Peace Hospital in Yola North Local Government Area, Adamawa State, from 2017 to 2023. The main objectives are to identify the leading causes of maternal mortality and assess the differences in mortality rates between the two hospitals. A log-linear model was used to analyze the relationships between maternal mortality, hospital location, cause of death (eclampsia, unsafe abortion, and protracted labor), and yearly trends. The findings reveal that protracted labor is the most significant cause of maternal mortality, especially in Peace Hospital, where its impact is more pronounced than in Specialist Hospital. The year 2021 recorded the highest maternal mortality rate, potentially due to systemic healthcare challenges during that period. Peace Hospital exhibited higher maternal mortality rates than Specialist Hospital, particularly related to labor complications. Based on these findings, it is recommended to strengthen obstetric care, particularly in Peace Hospital, improve public health education on safe pregnancy and delivery, and address socioeconomic barriers to healthcare access. These interventions are critical for reducing maternal mortality and improving maternal health outcomes in the region.
