Abstract

Urinary Schistosomiasis is prevalent in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. It continues to be a major public health concern in many rural communities in Nigeria. This study was aimed at determining the prevalence of urinary Schistosomiasis amongst rice farmers in Ichekene in Idah local government area, Kogi State. A cross-sectional study was conducted in the area using a structured questionnaire containing their demographic and social information. Urine samples were collected from fifty five (55) participants using leak-proof, closely-tight universal specimen bottle. These were transported to the microbiology laboratory, in the department of Biology/Microbiology, The Federal Polytechnic, Idah for parasitological examination. Test for presence of haematuria was also carried out using urinalysis test kit (combi-9). The result showed no positive case and none tested positive for haematuria. The significance of this results could be that the parasite is absent in the study population.
