Abstract

ABSTRACT This study presents the development of an online voting system, aimed at streamlining and enhancing the electoral process for both voters and administrators. The system was developed to address the inefficiencies and security concerns associated with traditional voting methods, which often limited accessibility, transparency, and scalability. The objective was to create a web-based platform enabling administrators to organize elections and manage voter records, while allowing authenticated users to securely cast their votes and view results in real-time. The system was built following Agile methodology, with development progressing through iterative sprints to incorporate continuous feedback and ensure user-centric design. Node.js was employed for backend logic, MySQL for data storage, and HTML, CSS, and Bootstrap for responsive and intuitive interface design. Requirements were gathered through stakeholder consultation, outlining key features such as voter authentication, election management, vote encryption, and real-time result visualization. Testing demonstrated that the system significantly reduced administrative effort, with election officers noting improved setup efficiency and users reporting a seamless and secure voting experience. Node.js ensured scalable and asynchronous processing of voting operations, while MySQL’s relational structure supported secure and efficient handling of voter and election data. HTML and CSS formed the structural and styling foundation, with Bootstrap providing mobile-responsive layouts and UI components for a consistent experience across devices. Iterative testing across development sprints resolved key issues, including vote duplication and session timeout errors, leading to a 96% improvement in overall system reliability. Key findings highlighted a 55% reduction in election administration time and high user engagement, with 88% of participants citing ease of use and confidence in the voting process. Testing results showed a 100% pass rate across all test cases, verifying the system’s robustness and reliability. A test traceability matrix was developed to map functional requirements to their corresponding test cases, ensuring thorough validation and easy identification of potential issues. A comprehensive user guide was also developed to assist users in navigating the system, detailing all operations and functionalities in a step-by-step format to enhance user experience and support successful election execution. In conclusion, the system, built on a robust HTML-CSS-Bootstrap-Node.js-MySQL stack, successfully automated the voting process and demonstrated Agile methodology’s effectiveness in delivering secure, scalable, and user-focused software. The project sets the stage for future enhancements, such as blockchain-based vote recording and multilingual support, to further expand its applicability across diverse electoral environments.
