Abstract

This research investigated the Effect of Problem-Solving Instructional Strategy on Students’ Performance jn Indices. The study adopted quasi-experimental design. The population of the study was one thousand five hundred and forty-six (1546) Junior Secondary School 2 (JSS II) students in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. While the sample for the study consist of eighty (199) students which comprise of 43 and 67 for the experimental groups and 41 and 58 students in the control groups respectively. Intact classes were used. Simple random sampling technique was used to select the schools. The instruments used in the study was Indices Achievement Test (IAT). IAT was validated by experts: the research supervisor, other lecturers from Mathematics education and measurements and evaluation. The IAT reliability coefficient index obtained was = 0.77 using Pearson Moment Correlation coefficient (PPMCC). Two research questions and two research hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The research questions were answered using Mean and Standard Deviation. While the hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance using t-test and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA). The results showed that; there is a significant difference in the students taught Indices using Problem-Solving Instructional Strategy and those taught using conventional strategy in favour of those taught using Problem-Solving Strategy. In the experimental groups, male students performed better than female students taught mathematics (Indices) using Problem-Solving Instructional Strategy. It was recommended that Educational authorities and curriculum planners should incorporate problem-solving instructional strategy into the mathematics curriculum since the approach fosters critical thinking and enhance students' understanding and performance in mathematical concepts such as indices.
