Abstract

ABSTRACT The present study deals with effect of waste engine oil on the growth and chlorophyll pigment of 6 Weeks old Vigna unguiculata. The seed of Vigna unguiculata were grown under the various treatments of waste engine oil (15ml, 30ml, 50ml, 100ml, 150ml, 200ml). The parameters studied were length and biomass of root and shoot, leaf number, leaf area, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, Total chlorophyll and Total carotenoids. All the selected parameters were found to be significantly decreased with increasing the concentration of waste engine oil. Chlorophyll a, b, and total chlorophyll of Vigna unguiculata showed insignificant decrease under treatment T5 while total carotenoid were found to be maximum increased (+150%) in compare to control. The present work highlights the need to prevent agricultural soil pollution with used engine oil. Contamination of soil with waste engine oil should be avoided in order to ensure healthy crop production.
