IMPLEMENTATION OF A SECURE AND EFFICIENT CAMPUS WI-FI SYSTEM USING SOFTWARE DESIGNED NETWORKING STARLINK
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This project explores the implementation and evaluation of a wireless network integrating Starlink satellite technology with a campus WiFi system to improve connectivity, bandwidth, and data accessibility for the Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun, College of Science. The objective is to address common connectivity challenges faced in large institutions, including network congestion, signal interference, and inadequate coverage, especially in remote or outdoor areas. A detailed analysis of system requirements, network topology, equipment selection, and integration methodologies has been conducted, followed by a comprehensive review of relevant literature and technological frameworks.
The research methodology includes defining the network architecture, equipment selection (routers, access points, Starlink terminals), and system design considerations to ensure optimized performance, security, and scalability. Specific design aspects cover bandwidth allocation, load balancing, latency reduction, and network redundancy, with a focus on combining Starlink’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite capabilities with conventional WiFi. The project also explores the theories underpinning wave propagation and modulation in wireless systems to optimize signal quality and minimize interference, guided by recent works in wireless and satellite network technology.
Experimental tests were conducted on the wireless network, and performance metrics such as throughput, latency, and signal stability were evaluated and discussed. Results indicate that the Starlink-enhanced WiFi network significantly improves campus-wide coverage, especially in previously unreachable areas, and provides low-latency internet access suitable for real-time applications. The system’s robustness against environmental conditions was also confirmed, though further optimization in extreme climates was suggested. Cost analysis, regulatory considerations, and scalability were assessed to provide insights for future expansions or adaptations of the network.
In conclusion, the Starlink-WiFi network presents a scalable and effective solution to enhance internet connectivity within campus environments, offering a practical model for other institutions facing similar connectivity challenges. Recommendations include periodic upgrades to accommodate evolving bandwidth needs and emerging technologies, ensuring the network’s adaptability and sustainability. This work contributes to the growing body of research on hybrid wireless networks, demonstrating the viability of integrating satellite internet with terrestrial WiFi in educational institutions.
