Abstract

ABSTRACT This study explores the role of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in addressing social inequality in Nigeria. Social inequality remains a significant challenge, characterized by disparities in education, healthcare, income, and political participation. Given the limitations of government efforts, NGOs have increasingly become vital agents in bridging these gaps and promoting social justice. A quantitative research design was employed, surveying 110 participants including NGO workers and beneficiaries. Findings revealed that NGOs actively engage in poverty alleviation, education, healthcare, women and youth empowerment, and policy advocacy. Despite positive impact, NGOs face challenges such as inadequate funding, inconsistent government policies, insecurity, and limited collaboration. The study concludes that NGOs play a critical role in mitigating social inequality but require enhanced support through funding, partnerships, capacity building, and enabling environments. Recommendations include improved NGO-government collaboration, capacity building for NGO staff, and stronger monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to promote equitable development in Nigeria.
