Abstract

ABSTRACT This study focuses on the design, development, and evaluation of a user-centered e-learning platform tailored to the needs of distance learning students in Nigeria. The increasing reliance on digital education, coupled with infrastructural challenges such as limited internet connectivity, low digital literacy, and restricted access to high-end devices, has highlighted the need for accessible and context-aware learning solutions. The study adopts a hybrid methodology, combining User-Centered Design principles with an Incremental Software Development approach, to ensure that the platform is both pedagogically effective and technically efficient. The system was developed using Python for the backend, HTML and Bootstrap for the frontend, and SQLite for database management, with emphasis on mobile responsiveness, offline accessibility, and low-bandwidth optimization. Functional modules, including user authentication, course management, content delivery, quizzes, assignments, and discussion forums, were implemented iteratively and tested with actual users to assess usability and effectiveness. The findings indicate that the platform successfully addresses common challenges faced by Nigerian distance learners, providing an intuitive interface, efficient performance under low-bandwidth conditions, and enhanced engagement with educational content. The study concludes that context-aware, low-data e-learning platforms can significantly improve access to education, support learner autonomy, and enhance academic outcomes in resource-constrained environments. Recommendations for future work include integrating analytics, live virtual sessions, and adaptive learning features to further enhance the platform’s pedagogical capabilities.
