Abstract

ABSTRACT This study was motivated by the growing integration of contemporary gospel music in Nigerian Pentecostal churches and the need to evaluate its tangible impact on church growth, particularly among youth and new members. With music increasingly becoming a central element of worship and outreach, it became essential to investigate whether this shift toward modern musical styles enhances or undermines spiritual depth, doctrinal consistency, and congregational development. Living Faith Church, Bashorun, Ibadan, Oyo State, was selected as a case study due to its vibrant use of contemporary worship music and its growing influence in the community. The research adopted a quantitative survey method, utilizing structured questionnaires administered to 50 members of the church across different age groups and departments. The instrument was divided into sections that captured respondents’ demographic information, worship experiences, and perceptions of church growth attributed to music. Responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics to assess trends, relationships, and variations among participants. Findings revealed that contemporary gospel music plays a strategic role in increasing church attendance, especially among youths, fostering emotional engagement during worship, and enhancing the spiritual atmosphere of services. Music also serves as a powerful tool for evangelism, attracting non-members through praise events and youth-focused worship programs. However, the study also noted that while music draws people in, it must be complemented with sound biblical teaching and structured discipleship for sustained spiritual maturity. In conclusion, contemporary music contributes significantly to church growth when effectively aligned with doctrinal values and spiritual objectives. It is recommended that churches invest in training for worship leaders, balance musical innovation with theological depth, and leverage music as a tool for both outreach and spiritual formation.
