Abstract

ABSTRACT Malaria infection is known to cause significant alterations in hematological parameters, particularly those related to red blood cells. This study evaluated the effect of ethanol extract of Arthropteris palisotii (Ikpaladidiy) on Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) and Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration (MCHC) in Plasmodium berghei-infected mice. Experimental mice were infected with P. berghei and treated with ethanol extract of the plant. Blood samples were collected after treatment and analyzed for MCV and MCHC using standard hematological methods. The results showed that malaria infection altered these hematological parameters, while treatment with the plant extract improved the values toward normal levels compared to the untreated infected group. These findings suggest that ethanol extract of Arthropteris palisotii may have beneficial effects on red blood cell indices during malaria infection. Further studies are recommended to confirm its therapeutic potential and identify the active components responsible for these effects.
