A CRITICAL APPRAISAL OF THE CONSEQUENCES OF INCONCLUSIVE ELECTIONS TO NIGERIA’S DEMOCRATIC SUSSTENANCE
Abstract
Inconclusive elections have become a recurring issue in Nigeria's electoral process, raising concerns about the integrity of democracy and governance. This study critically examines the causes, implications, and consequences of inconclusive elections on Nigeria's democratic sustenance. Using a mixed-method research design, the study integrates both qualitative and quantitative data sources, including government reports, academic literature, media publications, surveys, and interviews with political analysts and election observers. The findings reveal that inconclusive elections undermine democratic principles by creating political instability, weakening public confidence in the electoral process, and fostering post- election violence. Furthermore, they contribute to governance delays, increased litigation, and economic disruptions, thereby hindering national development. In the case of this study, Bayelsa was used as a case study to represent other affected states and the country at large. The study concludes that addressing the challenges associated with inconclusive elections requires comprehensive electoral reforms, institutional strengthening, and enhanced civic engagement. Recommendations include improving the capacity of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), adopting technology-driven electoral processes, ensuring strict adherence to electoral laws, and promoting political accountability to sustain Nigeria's democracy.
