Abstract

Abstract This study examined the relationship between conflict management and organisational performance in Guinness Nigeria Plc, Benin City, Edo State. Conflict is an inevitable phenomenon in every organisation due to differences in individual interests, values, goals, and perceptions among employees and management. When not properly managed, organisational conflict can lead to reduced productivity, poor employee morale, and strained workplace relationships. However, effective conflict management can enhance cooperation, improve communication, and promote organisational efficiency. The objective of this study was to evaluate how conflict management strategies influence organisational performance in Guinness Nigeria Plc. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. Data were collected from employees of Guinness Nigeria Plc in Benin City using structured questionnaires. A sample of respondents was selected using appropriate sampling techniques to ensure adequate representation of staff across different departments. The data collected were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods such as percentages, frequency distribution, and correlation analysis to determine the relationship between conflict management practices and organisational performance. The findings revealed that conflict occurs frequently in the organisation due to communication gaps, role ambiguity, competition for resources, and interpersonal differences among employees. The study also found that the application of appropriate conflict management strategies such as negotiation, collaboration, compromise, and effective communication significantly improves organisational performance. In addition, effective conflict management was found to enhance employee productivity, job satisfaction, teamwork, and overall organisational efficiency. The study concluded that conflict, when properly managed, can contribute positively to organisational growth and performance. It recommended that management of Guinness Nigeria Plc should adopt proactive conflict management strategies, encourage open communication, and provide regular training on conflict resolution for employees and managers. This will help minimise destructive conflict and promote a harmonious work environment that supports improved organisational performance.
