Abstract

ABSTRACT The study investigates the influence of board characteristics on the environmental performance of listed manufacturing firms in Nigeria, with a focus on board size, board independence, and board gender diversity. Drawing on stakeholder theory and corporate governance frameworks, the research employs descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression techniques to evaluate how these governance variables shape firms’ environmental outcomes. Findings reveal that board size and board independence exert positive and statistically significant effects on environmental performance, demonstrating the value of diverse expertise and effective monitoring in driving sustainability initiatives. Conversely, board gender diversity exhibits a negative and significant relationship, suggesting that structural or contextual barriers may limit the strategic influence of female directors within the Nigerian manufacturing sector. The study underscores the need for strengthened governance mechanisms, enhanced director empowerment, and improved regulatory oversight to promote robust environmental practices. It contributes to the ongoing discourse on corporate sustainability in emerging economies and provides actionable insights for policymakers, regulators, and corporate leaders seeking to align governance structures with global environmental standards.
