Abstract

This research work entitiled ‘evaluation of the nutrient value of three species of fish caught in otuoke river’ focuses on the collection and evaluation of nutrient value of healthy Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), snakehead (Parachannaafricana) and African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) caught by fishermenin Otuoke river, Ogbia L.G.A, Bayelsa State, Nigeria. The nutritional value of fish depends largely upon the type of food composition available for their consumption and how they utilize the food for their metabolic activity. The pollution of water and extreme fishing practices can affect fish growth and nutrient value. Proximate analysis was carried out to evaluate the nutrient of the samples. The evaluation shows the moisture; Oreochromis niloticus (80 ± 1.18), Clarias gariepinus(72.6 ± 0.85), and Parachannaafricana(50 ± 1.3)repectively. Protein; Parachannaafricana (22 ± 1.7), Clarias gariepinus (20 ± 0) and Oreochromis niloticus (14.9 ± 0.6). Fat; Parachannaafricana(1.7 ± 2.35), Clarias gariepinus(1.2 ± 0.6) and Oreochromis niloticus (1.2 ± 0.6). Ash; Oreochromis niloticus (0.4 ± 0.4), Clarias gariepinus(1.2 ± 0.6) and Parachannaafricana(1.8 ± 0.4). Carbohydrates; Parachannaafricana(9.2 ± 0.3), Clarias gariepinus(5 ± 2.05)and Oreochromis niloticus (3.5 ± 2.05). Phosphorus; Clarias gariepinus (27.9 ± 0.06), Parachannaafricana (24.5 ± 0.05) and Oreochromis niloticus (16.5 ± 0.06). Zinc; Clarias gariepinus(0.5 ± 0.01), Oreochromis niloticus (0.5 ± 0.01), Parachannaafricana(0.3 ± 0.02).Iron; Clarias gariepinus(1.7 ± 0.01), Parachannaafricana (1.5 ± 0.02) and Oreochromis niloticus (1.3 ± 0.02).Calcium; Oreochromis niloticus (30.5 ± 0.10)Parachannaafricana(21.7 ± 0.15) andClarias gariepinus(22.5 ± 0.10).The moisture content keeps them fresh, of good quality and resistant to bacterial contamination. The fish species are rich in protein and carbohydrates for growth and development. They also contain fats and minerals: phosphorus, zinc, iron, calcium serving as good source of energy. From the results, it is recommended that these fish species should be considered as a staple food in homes.
