Abstract

The Niger Delta, a region in southern Nigeria, has faced severe water pollution due to decades of oil exploration and production. This environmental disaster has devastating impacts on the local communities, ecosystems, and economy. This legal assessment examines the regulatory framework governing oil pollution in the Niger Delta, highlighting the gaps and inadequacies in the existing laws and policies. It critically analyzes the roles and responsibilities of key stakeholders, including the government, oil companies, and local communities. The assessment reveals a lack of effective enforcement mechanism and insufficient measures to prevent and mitigate oil spills. This work solicits for a comprehensive overhaul of the legal framework, including the adoption of stricter regulations, increased transparency, and community participation. Ultimately, this assessment aims to contribute to the development of a more effective legal framework to address water pollution in the Niger Delta and promote sustainable environmental management.
