Abstract

This study assessed the challenges facing practicing journalists in the present political dispensation in Nigeria, with a focus on Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Enugu State Chapter. The study was anchored on Social Responsibility theory and Development Media theory. The researcher adopted the survey research method for the execution of the study. A population of 200 was studied using the same figure as the sample size. The measuring instrument of the study was the questionnaire which was structured into open-ended and close-ended questions. The research questions were analysed using simple percentage table while the research hypotheses were tested using the Chi-Square statistical table. The findings amongst others revealed that practicing journalists have made concerted efforts to solve myriads of challenges facing them in the current democratic dispensation in Nigeria. The researcher recommended among others, that objectivity and fairness should be the watch word of the Nigerian press in order to retain readership and even improve on their market share.
