EFFECT OF PIDGIN ENGLISH ON COMMUNICATION IN ENGLISH AMONG NIGERIAN SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS: A CASE STUDY OF MAI KWATASHI COLLEGE, SABON GARI KANO STATE
Abstract
This study examines the effect of Pidgin English on communication in Standard English among secondary school students at Mai Kwatashi College, Sabon Gari, Kano State. The research investigates the prevalence of Pidgin English, its influence on students’ proficiency in Standard English, and the attitudes of both students and teachers towards its use in education. A quantitative research design was adopted, and data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to 200 students and 16 teachers. The findings reveal that Pidgin English is widely used among students in informal interactions and occasionally appears in academic discussions. While some students believe that Pidgin English helps them understand classroom materials better, many teachers express concern that excessive reliance on it may negatively affect students’ mastery of Standard English. The study concludes that although Pidgin English serves as an important communication tool in multilingual environments, its use in educational settings should be carefully managed to maintain academic language standards. The study recommends balanced language policies that recognize linguistic diversity while promoting effective communication in Standard English.
