Abstract

The study investigated the impact of social development expenditure on labor force participation in Nigeria, using data between 1990 and 2023. It specifically estimated the effect of government health spending and government education spending on the participation of the labor force using a multiple regression model. The test on the unit root indicated signs of non-stationarity of the variables, yet a long-run equilibrium relationship was identified through a cointegration test. Therefore, the error correction role was estimated by the ordinary least squares method in the short run, and the results indicate that the government education expenditure had a significant positive relationship, while the government health expenditure had positive but insignificant results with labor force participation in the short run and the long run results. In a bid to support the development of social spending in order to boost the number of people in the labor force, the report proposed strategic investments in education and health infrastructure, effective execution of social policies, as well as adoption of quality service delivery strategies
