Abstract

This study investigated the phytochemical constituents and antimicrobial activity of Scoparia dulcis, a medicinal plant widely used in traditional medicine for treating infections. Fresh plant materials were collected, dried, pulverized, and extracted using ethanol. Standard phytochemical screening revealed the presence of major bioactive compounds including alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, terpenoids, glycosides, and phenolics. The antimicrobial activity of aqueous and ethanol extracts was evaluated against selected microorganisms: Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans. Results showed that the ethanol extract exhibited stronger inhibitory effects compared to the aqueous extract, indicating higher extraction efficiency of ethanol for phytochemicals. The study provides scientific validation for the ethnomedicinal use of Scoparia dulcis and highlights its potential as a source of plant-based antimicrobial agents, particularly in an era of increasing resistance to conventional antibiotics.
