Abstract

This study investigates the impact of unemployment on youth restiveness in Bauchi State, Nigeria, a region grappling with significant socio-economic challenges. With youth unemployment rates soaring at approximately 42.5%, the research aims to explore how educational attainment, vocational training opportunities, and socio-economic status contribute to feelings of frustration and unrest among young people. Utilizing a descriptive research design, the study surveyed 400 respondents aged 18 to 35, employing both quantitative and qualitative methods to gather comprehensive data on the factors influencing youth behavior. Findings reveal a strong correlation between educational attainment and youth restiveness, with many respondents perceiving higher education as a stabilizing factor against unrest. However, systemic educational inequities persist, leading to feelings of inadequacy among those who perceive their qualifications as lower than their peers. Additionally, the study highlights the role of vocational training, noting that while awareness is high, participation remains low due to barriers such as financial constraints and stigma. Socio-economic status significantly influences youth behavior, with a majority recognizing the importance of financial stability in mitigating unrest. The study concludes that addressing youth unemployment and restiveness requires targeted interventions that enhance educational access, promote vocational training, and address socio-economic disparities. Recommendations include implementing comprehensive educational reforms, increasing awareness and participation in vocational training programs, and developing economic policies that support low-income families. By tackling these interconnected issues, stakeholders can foster a more stable and engaged youth population in Bauchi State.
