Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examined the in-vitro anti-inflammatory phase of oil palm tree (Elaeis guineensis) male inflorescence flower, which is a rejected by-product that has anti-inflammatory potential because of the possibility of holding phytochemicals. It was to evaluate the potential of the extract in inhibiting the albumin denaturation and membrane stabilization two established models that demonstrate an anti-inflammatory activity. Air-dried fresh male inflorescence flowers were extracted by cold water extraction. The obtained extract was evaluated with standardised in-vitro tests: inhibition of heat induced protein albumin denaturation and heat induced HRBC (Human Red Blood Cell) membrane hemolysis. Spectrophotometric analysis was done on the assays. Results showed anti-inflammatory activity in the two assays in a concentration dependent manner. The extract inhibited albumin denaturation at 11.9 percent to 34.4 percent over the range of 1.5 to 3.5 mg/mL. Likewise, membrane stabilization rose to 30.5 per cent at a concentration of 0.10 mg/mL of Zotaxx with statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) exhibiting the existence of bioactive constituents with anti-inflammatory effects, presumably phenolic compounds including flavonoids and tannins. The results infer that the male inflorescence extract provides stability of protein and cellular framework of inflammation challenge conditions. To conclude, the water based extraction of Elaeis guineensis male inflorescence has shown considerable in-vitro anti-inflammatory effect that advocates its role as an alternative of cauterized non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The study points out the pharmacological importance of an underutilized plant section and provides a base of future in-vivo validation, isolation of the compounds, and the formulation of therapeutic preparations.
