Abstract

This study critically examined the effects of Human Resource Management (HRM) practices on organizational performance, using Zenith Bank Plc, Agbor, Delta State as a case study. The research specifically assessed how recruitment and selection, training and development, performance appraisal, and rewards and compensation influence organizational outcomes. A descriptive survey design was adopted, and data were collected using structured questionnaires distributed to 342 employees, and were retrieved and analyzed. The study employed simple random sampling to ensure fair representation across departments. Findings revealed that effective recruitment and selection processes significantly enhance the bank’s ability to attract and retain competent employees, thereby boosting productivity and service delivery. Regular and structured training programs were shown to enhance employee skills, adaptability, and job performance. Furthermore, transparent and merit-based performance appraisal systems were found to increase employee motivation, accountability, and aid in identifying performance gaps. The study also established that competitive reward systems and equitable compensation packages positively influenced employee satisfaction, reduced turnover, and promoted organizational loyalty. Additionally, the presence of open communication and employee involvement fostered mutual trust, improved morale, and strengthened organizational commitment. Statistical analysis confirmed a strong and significant positive relationship between HRM practices and key performance indicators, including productivity, profitability, and employee satisfaction. The study concluded that the implementation of strategic HRM practices plays a crucial role in enhancing overall organizational performance. It was recommended that Zenith Bank should continually refine its HRM strategies to align with evolving business objectives and workforce expectations.
