Abstract

This research examines the historical evolution of Katsina-Ala, located in Benue State, Nigeria, focusing on the intricate relationships between migration patterns, settlement dynamics, and socio-economic development over a span of several decades. The study traces the origins and migrations of various ethnic groups, predominantly the Tiv, and analyses the factors influencing their movement, such as environmental changes, population pressures, and resource availability. It employs the Push-Pull Theory of Migration to elucidate the motivations behind these migrations and the resultant transformation of Katsina-Ala into a vibrant trade hub. By utilizing a blend of primary and secondary sources, including oral testimonies, the research provides a nuanced understanding of settlement patterns, land use, and cultural interactions between indigenous communities and migrants. Furthermore, it highlights the impact of colonial policies on local governance and economic practices. The findings underscore the complex interplay between migration, socio-economic development, and cultural integration, presenting Katsina-Ala as a significant case study in understanding broader migration dynamics in Nigeria. This research offers valuable insights into the town’s historical context and its implications for contemporary urban planning and policy-making.
