Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examined the effect of drug abuse on mathematics students’ academic performance in secondary schools in Mayo Belwa Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Nigeria. The study was carried out because drug abuse among students has become a growing concern that may negatively influence their academic achievement and overall development. The specific objectives of the study were to identify the common drugs abused by students, examine the causes of drug abuse among students, and determine the effects of drug abuse on students’ academic performance in mathematics. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study consisted of mathematics students in selected secondary schools in Mayo Belwa Local Government Area. A sample of 100 students was selected using simple random sampling technique. The instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire designed by the researcher. The data collected were analyzed using frequency and percentage. The findings of the study revealed that alcohol, cannabis, tramadol, cigarettes, and codeine are among the drugs commonly abused by students. The study also found that peer pressure, curiosity, stress and depression, poor parental supervision, and academic frustration are major factors that influence drug abuse among students. Furthermore, the results indicated that drug abuse leads to poor concentration, memory loss, poor class attendance, behavioral problems, and decline in students’ academic performance in mathematics. Based on the findings, the study concluded that drug abuse has a significant negative effect on the academic performance of mathematics students in secondary schools in Mayo Belwa Local Government Area. The study therefore recommended that schools should organize drug awareness programs, parents should monitor their children closely, and government should enforce strict regulations to control drug abuse among students.
