Abstract

ABSTRACT Stroke is a major neurological disorder characterized by interruption of cerebral blood flow, leading to neuronal injury and long-term disability. The present study investigated the therapeutic effects of saponins extracted from Khaya senegalensis and Tinospora cordifolia on the parieto-temporal cortex of stroke-induced rat models. Experimental stroke was induced using a standardized ischemic model, after which animals were treated with plant-derived saponins. Histological examination of the parieto-temporal cortex revealed severe neuronal degeneration in the untreated stroke group, including cytoplasmic vacuolation, nuclear pyknosis, and reduced neuronal density. However, treatment with saponins from both plants significantly improved neuronal structure and increased cortical integrity. Combined treatment produced the most pronounced neuroprotective effect, with near-normal histological appearance. The findings suggest that saponins from Khaya senegalensis and Tinospora cordifolia possess significant neuroprotective properties and may serve as potential therapeutic agents in the management of stroke-induced brain injury.
