Abstract

This study examines the Challenges of Managing the Vanger Gbirin Dance Troupe in a Recessed Economy within the context of Nigeria's recessed economy. Employing qualitative research methods, including interviews, the research delves into the Troupe's historical evolution, management practices, and resilience strategies. The findings reveal that the troupe operates under a hierarchical structure that integrates traditional leadership with modern management practices. A Chairman and a five-member executive committee oversee daily operations, while the Tor Shor serves as the ultimate decision-maker, ensuring cultural values are upheld alongside efficient management. Financially, the Troupe sustains itself through a diversified approach, including performance fees, donations from well-wishers, and revenues from a cooperative society established in their name. This strategy not only provides economic stability but also fosters community involvement and ownership. However, the Troupe faces significant challenges in a recessed economy. Reduced disposable incomes have led to declining financial support from performances and donations, hindering the Troupe's ability to cover operational costs and invest in necessary resources. Additionally, audience engagement diminishes as individuals prioritize essential expenditures over cultural activities, impacting ticket sales and community support. The lack of robust institutional backing further exacerbates these issues, leaving the troupe vulnerable during financial crises. Despite these challenges, the Ugambe Vanger Gbirin Dance Troupe demonstrates resilience through adaptive strategies. By integrating traditional leadership with modern management practices and employing diversified financial strategies, the troupe navigates economic hardships while preserving its cultural mission. This adaptability underscores the importance of innovative approaches in sustaining cultural organisations amidst external pressures. The study concludes that a multifaceted approach is essential for the sustainability of traditional dance troupes like Ugambe Vanger Gbirin. Recommendations include enhancing institutional support, implementing audience development initiatives, leveraging digital platforms for broader reach, fostering collaborative partnerships, and investing in capacity-building programs for members. These strategies aim to strengthen the troupe's resilience against economic challenges, ensuring the preservation and promotion of its rich cultural heritage for future generation.
