Abstract

Abstract Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs) remain a critical occupational health concerns among health care workers due to the physical demands of patient care, prolonged standing, awkward postures and repetitive tasks. These conditions not only affect workers wellbeing but also reduce productivity and increase absenteeism. This study assessed the prevalence, risk factors and impact of WRMSDs among health care workers at Federal Medical Center Abeokuta, Ogun State. A descriptive cross-sectional design was employed and data was collected using a validated structured questionnaire (Cronbach's alpha = 0.738). Stratified proportional sampling was applied to select 331 respondents across various departments and laboratory staff. Data were analyzed with SPSS version 25 using descriptive statistics, chi-square, and logistic regression tests at a 5% significance level. Findings reveal that 93.4% of respondents reported experiencing WRMSDs, with low back pain (90.9%) being the most prevalent symptoms. The mean age of participants was 29.6 years, with females (65.9%) more affected than males (34.1%). Key contributory factors included long working hours (100%), poor posture during patient handling (96.7%). Furthermore, WRMSDs significantly impaired productivity, as 97.3% of respondents agreed it reduces speed and accuracy, while 78.9% reported absenteeism related to pain. The study concludes that WRMSDs are highly prevalent among healthcare workers in FMC Abeokuta, negatively impacting efficiency and overall job satisfaction. It is recommended that the hospital management implement structured ergonomic interventions such as safe patient handling equipment, regular rest breaks, and training in body mechanics to mitigate risks and enhance staff well-being.
