DETERMINATION OF SOME HEMATOLOGICAL PARAMETERS OF PREGNANT WOMEN IN THEIR FIRST TRIMESTER ATTENDING ANTENATAL CLINIC AT UNIOSUN TEACHING HOSPITAL OSOGBO
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Hematological profile is considered one of the factors affecting pregnancy and its outcome. Anemia is the most common hematological problem in pregnancy, followed by thrombocytopenia. Leukocytosis is almost always associated with pregnancy. The study reported here was designed to evaluate the overall mean values of seven major hematological parameters and their mean values at first trimesters of pregnancy.
The mean age of the 120 pregnant women who participated in the study was 30.52 ± 4.9years (range: 18-49 years old). Most of the participants (72/120; 60.21%) were in aged 26-36 at the time of the study, while 33(27.37%) were aged 36-45 and 15(12.40%) were aged 18-25. About three-quarters of the participants (89/120; 74.45%) had had tertiary education, 28 (22.99%) had secondary education, and (2.25%) had primary education (3/120)
This was a study carried out at the UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, Nigeria, from January to April, 2024. This research was carried out on 150 apparently healthy pregnant women who presented for booking for antenatal care in their first trimester. Their ages ranged from 18 to 49 years. Similarly, 150 age-matched females consisting of health science students and the staff of UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital, constituted the control group(30 women as control group). 120 subjects completed the study as the subjects. Blood samples collected for PT and APTT were analyzed using standard laboratory methods. The mean value of PT in the control subjects (14.68 ± 1.07) was significantly increased when compared with the first trimester (12.86 ± 1.29), (F = 300.9, P = 0.000). The mean value of APTT in the control subjects was also significantly increased at first trimester (30.10 ± 4.49), (F = 24.1, P = 0.000)
This study has shown that pregnancy shortens PT and APTT. This effect helps to prevent excessive maternal bleeding during delivery. Therefore, early evaluation of these parameters is encouraged to monitor pregnancy and prevent pregnancy complications.
