USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN ENVIRONMENTAL COMMUNICATION FOR DISASTER PREPAREDNESS IN MAKURDI METROPOLIS
Abstract
The study is on use of Artificial Intelligence in environmental communication strategies for enhancing disaster preparedness in Makurdi Metropolis. The objective of the study was to examine the use of Artificial Intelligence in environmental communication strategies for enhancing disaster preparedness and response in Makurdi. The study was anchored on Technological Determinism theory and Diffusion of Innovations theory. The study employed survey design with questionnaire as a tool to elicit data from 400 respondents. Findings of the study revealed that a considerable number of respondents (58.7%) received AI-generated disaster alerts, demonstrating a growing adoption of AI in disaster communication. The study also revealed that, despite the potentials of AI, challenges still persist, the most significant barriers include lack of awareness, poor network infrastructure, delayed or inaccurate information, and low trust in AI-generated warnings. Thus, the study concluded that AI-driven early warning systems have proven effective in mitigating disaster risks by providing timely alerts. Hence the study recommended that AI applications in disaster communication should be tailored to the specific environmental, infrastructural, and social conditions in Makurdi
