INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE OF AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM IN SOME OFFICES OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING BUILDING
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This project focuses on the installation, and maintenance of air conditioning systems within the Mechanical Engineering Department building. The primary objective was to ensure effective cooling performance, improved air quality, and thermal comfort in various offices while gaining practical exposure to the principles of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems. The study began with the design stage, which involved selecting appropriate system components such as the compressor, condenser, evaporator, refrigerant, capillary tube, thermostat, relay, and stabilizer, based on standard engineering specifications. A split-type air conditioning unit was installed for one office, while four other existing units were diagnosed and serviced through corrective maintenance. Cooling load estimation was performed for all rooms using their dimensions, occupancy, and internal heat sources to determine the required capacity and unit placement. During installation, the evaporator unit was mounted at a height of 2.5m, and the condenser at 2.3m above ground level, ensuring adequate airflow and ease of maintenance. Maintenance activities included identifying and repairing refrigerant leaks, electrical faults, and damaged copper lines. Office 2 (Automobile Workshop) required remounting of the outdoor unit to prevent vandalism, while Offices 3, 4, and 5 (Computer Laboratory) involved electrical repairs and sealing of suction line leakages. After maintenance and testing, all systems were restored to full operation, showing improved cooling efficiency and reduced power fluctuations. The project demonstrated that effective air conditioning performance depends heavily on proper installation practices, accurate load estimation, and regular preventive maintenance. In conclusion, the project provided valuable hands-on experience in the practical application of mechanical engineering principles, highlighting the importance of maintenance culture, safety compliance, and environmental responsibility in HVAC system operation. It is recommended that routine servicing schedules, the use of quality materials, and adequate technician training be implemented to ensure long-term system reliability and energy efficiency.
