Abstract

ABSTRACT Garcinia kola (known locally as bitter kola) is regarded as a miracle plant because every component has medicinal use.. The aim of this study was to determine the phytochemical profile and of seed extract antibacterial activity of Allium sativum and Garcina kola against Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi.. The study was carried out in Jimeta-Yola. Jimeta-Yola is located longitude 12° 38 and latitude 9° 14. Allium sativum seeds and Garcinia kola seeds were bought from Jimeta Modern Market and their extracts gotten using cold maceration method. The identity of the Test bacteria were confirmed using morphological and Biochemical Characteristics. The study examined the antibacterial activities and synergistic potential of combining extracts of both plants, as well as their minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). Allium sativum crude extract had the highest antibacterial activity against Salmonella typhi at 200 mg/mL while Ethanol extract of Garcinia kola had the lowest activity against Salmonella typhi at 200 mg/mL. Result of the MIC revealed that Allium sativum in combination with both extracts of Garcinia kola showed highest inhibitory activity against Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi at 6.25 mg/mL. Allium sativum crude extract showed highest bactericidal concentration against Salmonella typhi at 25 mg/mL. Since garlic demonstrated the highest inhibitory and bactericidal activities against both Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi, it should be further investigated for possible development into standardized herbal formulations or pharmaceutical products
