Abstract

This study investigated the knowledge of cervical cancer screening among female nursing students in Madonna University Elele Rivers State. A descriptive cross sectional survey research design was adopted for the study, and the population comprised of six hundred (600) female nursing students. The study sample consisted of 240 female nursing students drawn through multi-stage sampling procedure. The instrument used in collecting data for the study was a structured questionnaire titled Female Nursing Students’ Knowledge of Cervical Cancer Screening Questionnaire. The reliability of the instrument was determined using test retest method which yielded a correlation co-efficient of 0.85. Data collected were analyzed using frequency tables, percentages and bar charts. Result shows that 234(97.5%) were aware of the existence of cervical cancer. Majority, 110(45.8%) had no knowledge of screening procedures for cervical cancer. The major factors affecting the utilization of these services were inadequate knowledge as expressed by 90(37.5%) of the respondents. This result reflects the need for more education regarding cervical cancer screening services so as to encourage utilization. If female nursing students’ knowledge is substantially upgraded, they can positively impact this knowledge to patients, friends, relatives and everyone around them thereby reducing morbidity and mortality rates associated with cervical cancer and subsequently promoting the development of the country
