Abstract

This study examined the growth performance of chicks fed on feed formulated from maize and cassava peel meal. A total of thirty chicks were bought from a local source in Abia State, Nigeria. The chicks were randomly divided into three groups and were assigned experimental diets with maize and cassava peel meal as feed. The feeding trial lasted for eight weeks. During the experiment, feed intake, weight gain, and feed conversion ratio were recorded weekly. Results showed that chicks fed with cassava peel meal had significant improvement in weight gain compared to those fed with maize only. However, there was no significant difference in feed intake among the groups. The feed conversion ratio indicated better efficiency in the group receiving cassava peel meal supplementation. The study concludes that cassava peel meal can be used as a partial replacement for maize in chick diets without adverse effects on growth performance. This could help reduce the cost of poultry feed and improve sustainability in poultry production, especially in developing countries where maize prices are high.
