ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF POOR WASTE MANAGEMENT ON ENVIROMENTAL HEALTH AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: AREA, IKA SOUTH DELTA STATE.
Abstract
This study investigates the impact of poor waste management on environmental health and sustainable development in Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, using Agbor as a case study. The research was motivated by the increasing challenges posed by indiscriminate waste disposal, environmental pollution, and the rising incidence of waste-related health issues in the area. A descriptive survey design was adopted, and data were collected from residents using structured questionnaires and chi_ square. The findings revealed that poor waste management practices, including open dumping and irregular waste collection, have contributed to environmental degradation, blocked drainage systems, and the spread of diseases such as malaria, cholera, and typhoid. The study also identified weak government enforcement, lack of public awareness, inadequate infrastructure, and low community participation as key barriers to effective waste management. Based on these findings, the study recommends improved waste disposal infrastructure, stronger enforcement of environmental sanitation laws, community involvement, and increased public education on proper waste practices. The research concludes that sustainable waste management is vital for protecting public health, preserving the environment, and promoting long-term development in Ika South and beyond.
