Abstract

ABSTRACT This study looked at the reasons for increased international labour migration and how it has impacted Nigeria. The study argued that international labour migration has some impacts on Nigeria's national development where certain factors affected the growth of Nigeria as a nation. Nigeria's economy has been underdeveloped as a result of brain drain, which has caused our greatest human resources to keep departing for countries with more favourable economic conditions. Africa as a whole is involved in this issue, not only Nigeria development, but the situation in Africa is also frightening, necessitating urgent action by African leaders to solve the issue. Research conducted for this study, however, indicates that economic growth requires professional, expertise, entrepreneurial, and managerial abilities in addition to investments in the real economy sector. The specific objectives of the study are to (1.). Find out if Nigeria's control over her labour migration policies led to best practices within the International Labour Organization and (2). Determine whether international labour migration impacted Nigeria's economic development. The study made use of secondary sources of data, which were gathered through the documentary technique and included books, journals, official records, and the internet. The push-pull hypotheses, which describes how migration and brain drain either lead to development or under development of a country, serves as the theoretical foundation for this study. The study's conclusion and recommendations show that while migration has negatively impacted Africa and Nigeria, it has helped most advanced economies flourish. According to the research's conclusions, the government should prioritise human resources and make sure that workers are given better pay because doing so will improve living conditions and lower emigration. The total effect of this will assist Nigeria in maximising its potential for economic and national growth. Keywords: International labour migration, policy, economic growth, national development.
