IMPACT OF TERRORISM ON NIGERIA SECURITY
Abstract
This study examines the impact of terrorism on Nigeria’s security and its implications for national development. The aim of the study is to assess how terrorist activities affect the security situation and economic growth of the country. A questionnaire method was used to collect data from respondents in order to understand public perception and the effects of terrorism on society. The findings reveal that terrorism and insecurity have significantly affected Nigeria, leading to loss of lives and destruction of property. The activities of the Islamic sect known as Boko Haram, particularly in the northern part of the country, have resulted in bombings, suicide attacks, sporadic shootings, and the destruction of public institutions such as police stations and churches. In addition, kidnapping, rape, armed robbery, and political crises have contributed to the growing insecurity in the country. These challenges have forced the government to divert resources meant for development into security operations. The study concludes that terrorism and insecurity negatively affect economic development in Nigeria and create social problems such as homelessness, widows, and orphans. Therefore, stronger security measures and effective government policies are necessary to address terrorism and promote national development
