Abstract

This report investigates the antimicrobial effectiveness of low-temperature calcined green selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) doped with natural hydroxyapatite (nHAp), synthesized using eco-friendly methods with Jatropha tanjorensis leaf extract. The doping of nHAp with SeNPs, followed by low-temperature calcination, enhances the stability, bioactivity, and antimicrobial properties of the composite. Characterization techniques reveal notable improvements in physicochemical properties, including increased surface area, uniform nanoparticle distribution, and optimized crystallinity, with selenium nanoparticles ranging from 10.47 to 32.83 nm in size. Antimicrobial assays demonstrate significant inhibitory effects against key pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Proteus mirabilis, highlighting the synergistic action of selenium and hydroxyapatite. Furthermore, immersion studies in modified simulated body fluid indicate favorable conditions for the formation of carbonate-hydroxyapatite (CHA), suggesting enhanced osteogenic potential. Overall, low-temperature calcined Se-doped nHAp emerges as a promising candidate for applications in bone regeneration, combining biocompatibility, enhanced bioactivity, and potent antimicrobial properties, with implications for improved outcomes in orthopedic and dental fields.
