HAEMATOLOGY AND SERUM BIOCHEMICAL INDICES OF WEST AFRICAN DWARF (WAD) GOAT FED GRADED LEVEL OF BOILED ICACINIA MANNI MEAL
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The study was carried out to determine the haematological and serum biochemistry of West African Dwarf (WAD) goats fed graded levels of boiled icacinia manni meal (BICMM). Sixteen (16) West African Dwarf (WAD) goats aged between 9-12 month, were weighed and allocated to four (4) dietary treatments, with four (4) replicates per parameter with one (1) goat being a replicate. The Experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design (CRD) and lasted for 56 days. The four experimental diet were formulated with or using cassava peel, brewer dried grain (BDG), palm kernel cake (PKC), bone meal and salt of equal amount except (BDG). BICMM was included at (0% BICMM), (10% BICMM), (20% BICMM). On arrival the animals were housed and quarantine for 14 days. On the third day, after quarantine, the animals were dewormed and also treated against ecto-parasite. Feeding was done twice a day animal, in which concentrate were given by S:00 am and forage was given by 2:00pm. Clean water was served ad libitum. A sample of 5 ml of the blood was collected into plastic bottle containing Ethylene Diaminefor 14days Tetra-acetate (EDTA) through the jugular vein for haematological assay. Parameters considered include packed cell volume (PCV), red blood cell (RBC. white blood cell (WBC), haemoglobin (HB), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH,. mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration fMCHCj. Another 5 ml of blood sample was collected into plain bottles without EDTA for serum biochemical component analysis. The parameters for serum include: Total protein, cholesterol, bilirubin, urea, creatinine, calcium, alkaline phosphatase (ALP). The blood was taken from two replicate (goat) from each of the four treatments. The blood was collected two times, firstly, the blood was taken before the animal were fed icacinia manni, jinaly, the blood was collected again at the end of the experiment (p (BICMM) had the highest value of RBC (10.5) while those in the other g-oup T] having 0% inclusion level of (BICMM) recoded the least value 7.50.
