FIELD TRIP AND EXPOSITORY INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN PHYSICS IN MKPAT ENIN LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA
Abstract
The study investigated the field trip and expository instructional methods on students’ academic achievement in Physics in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom state. Four research questions and corresponding hypotheses were formulated for the study. The design for the study was a pretest-posttest quasi-experimental research design. The population of this study comprised all 1942 Senior Secondary two (SS II) Physics students in the sixteen (16) public secondary schools in the study area during the 2022/23 session. The sample for the study consisted of 92 students which were drawn from four intact classes in four secondary schools in the study area. Simple random sampling technique was used for the selection. The researcher developed an instrument entitled “Physics Practical Test (PPT)” was adopted for data collection. The instrument was subjected to face and content validity. A reliability coefficient of .82 was obtained for the instrument using Kuder-Richardson 20 formula. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the hypotheses. The finding showed that there is a significant difference in the mean performance scores of physics students taught the concept of electric current using field trip and expository instructional methods in favour those exposed to field trip. The finding also showed that there is no significant difference in the mean performance scores between male and female students taught the concept of electric current. The finding further showed that there is no significant difference in the mean retention scores between male and female students taught the concept of electric current and there is no significant difference in the mean performance scores between urban and rural students taught the concept of electric current. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that students taught concept of electric current using field trip method performed academically better than those taught using expository instructional methods. It was therefore recommended among others that, Physics teachers should strive to use field trip instructional method in teaching physics concepts as this would help to enhance and facilitate academic performance of students in Physics.
