Abstract

This study investigated the antifungal activity of Lawsonia inermis (Henna) leaf extracts against selected dermatophytes isolated from clinical sources. Three dermatophyte species were identified based on cultural and microscopic characteristics. Ethanolic henna extracts were evaluated for antifungal efficacy at concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 1.6 mL. The results demonstrated dose-dependent inhibition zones, with the highest concentration (1.6 mL) producing inhibition zones of 5.0 ± 1.0 mm against all isolates. Although these values were lower than the standard antifungal control (11.5 ± 0.5 mm), the findings remain biologically significant. The study confirmed that Lawsonia inermis possesses antifungal properties against dermatophytes of clinical importance. Ethanolic extracts were more effective than expected aqueous forms due to better solubility of active compounds in organic solvents. Among the tested fungi, T. erinacei showed slightly higher susceptibility, suggesting variability in dermatophyte responses. Although not as potent as conventional antifungal drugs, henna extracts demonstrated promising complementary activity, supporting their traditional use in the management of dermatophytic infections such as ringworm. These findings provide a scientific basis for further exploration of henna as a natural source of antifungal agents.chemical characterization of Lawsonia inermis extracts should be conducted to isolate and identify the specific compounds responsible for antifungal activity.
