Abstract

This study examines the effect of chief executive officer’s attributes on voluntary disclosure of quoted industrial goods firms in Nigeria. The study relies on secondary data derived from various companies’ financial statements and the Nigerian Exchange Group fact book to determine and measure the level of voluntary disclosures by various firms in corporate financial statements, applying an all-inclusive multivariate analysis. Out of a population of 16 listed industrial goods firms, 10 were chosen after filtration on account of data availability for the period of seven years spanning 2018 to 2024. The study employed ex-post facto and longitudinal research design. The secondary sources of data were collected from annual reports of the selected industrial goods companies and four (4) specific objectives and hypotheses were subjected to some preliminary data tests like descriptive statistics, histogram normality tests, Pearson correlation analysis and variance Inflation Factor and were tested and analyzed using binary logit regression analysis. The empirical analysis using a total of 70 firm-year observations, shows that Chief Executive Officers Tenure has positive and significant effect on voluntary disclosure of quoted industrial goods companies in Nigeria which was statistically significant at 1% level of significance while a positive but insignificant effect were documented for CEO age. Again, CEO ownership shows a negative and significant effect with voluntary disclosure of industrial goods companies in Nigeria which was statistically significant at 5% level of significance. In line with the findings, this study therefore recommended among others that, long tenure of CEOs should be encouraged among Nigeria industrial goods firms to improve their voluntary disclosure practices while emphasis on appointment of female CEOs should be discouraged among Nigerian firms in order to improve voluntary disclosure.
