PREDICTORS OF PREVENTIVE MEASURES ASSOCIATED WITH MOTHER- TO-CHILD TRANSMISSION OF HIV/AIDS AMONG PREGNANT WOMEN IN LAUTECH TEACHING HOSPITAL, OGBOMOSO, OYO STATE.
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Human Immuno deficiency Virus (HIV/AIDS) according to World Health Organization is the infection that attacks the CD4 cells. Globally, 2.6 million children younger than 15 years of age are living with HIV, yet only 32% are accessing highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART). The broad aim of the study was to determine the predictors of preventive measures associated with Mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS among pregnant women at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, Oyo State. The design used was a descriptive cross sectional study design. A total of 121 respondents were recruited and all the respondents completed the questionnaires and had adequate data for analysis (SPSS package) 21st edition. The overall result of the study revealed that the very known predictor of preventive measures associated with transmission of HIV/AIDS from mother-to-child is the Maternal Viral Load. The risk for mother-to-child transmission increases with higher viral loads.
The major factor influencing the transmission of HIV/AIDS from Mother-to-child is not using condom for protection (68.6%), Majority (81.8%) of the respondents had adequate knowledge of the processes involved in the transmission of HIV/AIDS from Mother-tochild. Follow up of a child delivered by a HIV positive Mother(81.8%) was the leading preventive measure associated with the transmission of HIV/AIDS from Mother-to-child. Three research questions were tested using chi-square 0.05% level of significance and revealed that the age of the respondents is not significantly related to the obstetrics care during delivery reducing mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS from mother to child,
the marital status of the respondents were also found not to be significantly related to the use of condom for protection. The following recommendation was made: Health professionals should organize health campaigns in hospitals to enlighten pregnant women on the processes of transmission and prevention of HIV/AIDS.
