Abstract

The increasing demand for energy efficiency, reduced emissions, and operational reliability in maritime transportation has driven the need for advanced onboard energy systems. This project focuses on the design and fabrication of a hybrid energy storage system (HESS) for ships, integrating multiple energy storage technologies—such as batteries and supercapacitors—to optimize power management and improve overall system performance. The proposed system aims to combine the high energy density of batteries with the high power density and rapid charge–discharge capabilities of supercapacitors. This hybrid configuration is designed to handle dynamic load variations commonly experienced in marine operations, such as propulsion, navigation systems, and auxiliary loads. By implementing an intelligent energy management strategy, the system ensures efficient energy distribution, prolongs battery lifespan, and enhances fuel economy. The design process involves system modeling, component selection, control strategy development, and simulation to evaluate performance under varying operational conditions. Fabrication includes assembling the selected storage components, integrating power electronic converters, and developing a control unit for real-time energy management. Performance testing is conducted to validate system efficiency, reliability, and response to transient loads. The results demonstrate that the hybrid energy storage system significantly reduces fuel consumption, minimizes greenhouse gas emissions, and improves the operational stability of ships. This project highlights the potential of hybrid energy systems as a sustainable solution for modern maritime applications, contributing to greener and more efficient marine transportation.
